RIDE IN REVIEW
BY ZEV GROSS
I thought I will send you a few words about the R2R trip to Savannah. There were ten of us: Lynn and Sid, Marge and Ron, Shelly and Michael, Lily and Mike and Hanna and Zev.
We met at the Lake Worth Service Island on the Turnpike and left there about 8.45. After a short gas up stop about 100 miles into the drive we stopped at Destination Daytona for a nice leisurely lunch. Unfortunately the weather turn on us after lunch, and we were in and out of rain most of the afternoon all the way to Savannah. After checking in we went to the Hospitality Suite, got our credentials and found out that the ride from Savannah to Charleston was canceled. The next morning we decided to rent a big van and go on the ride anyway. We got to Charleston just in time to participate in a somber yet beautiful ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial in Charleston. After a late lunch we drove back to Savannah just in time for the Shabbath dinner. The keynote speakers were two Holocaust survivors who spoke eloquently and brought tears to all of us. The trip was worth it, just listening to them. On Saturday the weather improved, and our organized trip to Fort Pulasky and Tybee Island was great. On Saturday afternoon we started our trip to ST. Augustine. After checking in, the guys went to the pool to smoke and schmooze, while the gals went to the outlet mall.
Sunday morning Michael, Hanna and Zev left early on the trip home, while the rest of the group went for brunch to Orlando and then returned home. I must mention the special contributions for this great trip to: Sid for organizing and leading, to Mike Pikman for sweeping and driving the van to Charleston, to Lily for bringing and driving her personal car the whole trip. To Ron Miller for coming up with the idea to rent a van so we can make the trip to Charleston, to Michael for leading the early group safely home on Sunday, and for all the members for their participation.
Next year’s R2R is scheduled to be in Chicago.
